Prep Spotlight: Norris powers SHG, plus other local results from May 3-4

SOFTBALL

SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN 17, LANPHIER 1 (4 innings): At SHG’s Comstock Field, McKenna Norris hit a two-run home run and finished with four RBIs in the Cyclones’ Central State Eight Conference win.  

Norris’ home run came in the Cyclones’ 12-run third inning to turn a 3-1 lead into a commanding 15-1 lead. She also hit a two-run double.  

Libby Kulek was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and four runs scored.  

Lucy Wegner finished with two doubles for SHG.  

Kenzie Wieland struck out nine and allowed two hits, no walks and no earned runs for the win.  

NORTH MAC 3, PANA 1: At Virden, Taylor Keirs struck out five but scattered four hits and one walk to pick up the complete-game South Central Conference win.  

Alexis Bowman led North Mac by going 3-for-3 at the plate. Reese Perrine had North Mac’s only RBI.  

Izzy Reed had Pana’s only RBI while Kennedy Bowker doubled and Lilly Jostes tripled for the Panthers.  

CARTERVILLE 5, CHATHAM GLENWOOD 2: At Carterville, the Titans got three doubles — one each from Mollie Cascio, Cassandra Feld and Irie Lohrenz — in their nonconference loss.  

Taryn Griffith went 2-for-4 and was the Titans’ lone multiple-hitter. 

CARTERVILLE 3, CHATHAM GLENWOOD 2: At Carterville, Glenwood’s Karmen Edwards smacked a two-run home run in the fifth inning, but the Titans’ comeback fell short as Carterville earned a doubleheader sweep. 

Ryleigh Kiel finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and Ava Bobb had two hits with a triple in the loss.  

Carterville (28-1) scored three runs in the third off losing pitcher Cassandra Feld, who went the distance and gave up seven hits and one earned run with four strikeouts and no walks. 

NORMAL U-HIGH 5, SPRINGFIELD HIGH 0: At Normal, Mia Volpert struck out nine batters without allowing a walk, but the Senators’ offense was quieted in a Central State Eight Conference matchup.  

Kendall Knauer and Milan Robinson had Springfield High’s only hits.

Friday's results

SOFTBALL

MORTON 20, WILLIAMSVILLE 13 (9 innings): At Williamsville, Morton scored eight runs in the top of the ninth inning for a nonconference win.  

Morton finished with 21 hits and Williamsville totaled 16. Addison Booth and Aylvia Springer both had a two-run home run in the ninth for Morton to secure the victory. 

The Potters trailed 11-7 until they scored five runs in the top half of the seventh to take a 12-11 lead. The Bullets sent it into extra innings when Reese Larson (4-for-5, two runs) singled in a run with two outs in the bottom half to tie the game at 12 apiece.   

Williamsville’s Izzy Nowack smacked a pair of home runs and ended with four RBIs and three runs scored. Nicole Sinks homered and went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs, while Norah Dodsworth was 4-for-5 with an RBI and scored twice. 

Springer finished with two home runs and went 3-for-7 with five RBIs and five runs scored in the leadoff spot for Morton. 

MARION 6, CHATHAM GLENWOOD 5: At Marion, Ryleigh Kiel went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in the Titans’ nonconference loss.

Glenwood outhit Marion 12-9 but was charged with four errors.  

Irie Lohrenz was 2-for-2 for the Titans.  

AUBURN 12, ATHENS 1 (5 innings): At Athens, Addison Wheatley drove in four runs and Meena Taylor hurled a two-hitter in Auburn’s Sangamo Conference win.  

Wheatley doubled in two runs in the fourth and had a two-run single in the fifth. Taylor struck out eight, walked three and gave up no unearned runs.  

Taylor also helped her own cause by going 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Maddie Schoen collected a couple of hits and two RBIs and Piper Taylor finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Addison Jones had two hits and scored twice.  

BUFFALO TRI-CITY 17, LANPHIER 0 (4 innings): At Buffalo, Tiffany Farley drove in four runs and finished 3-for-3 in the Tornadoes’ nonconference blowout win. 

Farley doubled three times and scored twice. Audrey Cooper also had four RBIs to go along with her pair of doubles out of the leadoff spot. 

Savannah Sladek had three RBIs despite going 0-for-2. Lexi Patton and Kamryn Sturdy combined for five hits.  

Lillian Woodworth struck out four in three shutout innings. She allowed two hits and no walks.  

Maylee Payne had two of Lanphier’s three hits. 

SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN 13, LEXINGTON 0 (5 innings): At SHG’s Comstock Field, Kenzie Wieland hit a grand slam to finish with a game-high four RBIs as the Cyclones cruised to a nonconference win.  

Just after Libby Kulek drew a bases-loaded walk to give SHG a 9-0 lead, Wieland smashed a 1-1 pitch over the wall in center field for the Cyclones’ final tallies to cap a six-run inning.  

McKenna Norris also hit a three-run homer for SHG.  

Wieland also dominated on the mound with 14 strikeouts in her complete-game shutout. She allowed one hit and one walk. 

MOWEAQUA CENTRAL A&M 11, RAYMOND LINCOLNWOOD 1 (6 innings): At Moweaqua, Kirsten Pope hit an RBI single to give the Lancers a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, but the Raiders scored 11 runs on just seven hits to turn the nonconference game into a rout.
