David E. Daniels, 77, of Springfield, passed away at his home with family on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

He was born October 12, 1946, in Springfield, the son of Herman and Ida Marie Desalle Daniels. David married Mary Ellen Dodge on April 8, 1967, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Springfield. She preceded him in death on June 22, 2023, after 56 wonderful years of marriage.

David graduated from Lanphier High School and earned his master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla. He went on to work for Hanson Professional Services, Inc., where he played a significant role in establishing Hanson as a recognized leader in Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, and Design of Earth and Rockfill Dams. He retired from Hanson after 36 years of service. David was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Growing up, he enjoyed playing sports with his brothers and went on to coach both of his sons in baseball and hockey. David continued to coach youth baseball for about 20 years. He became an avid golfer, and he loved travelling and playing golf with his wife and family. David volunteered at Habitat for Humanity building homes, donated many pints of blood over the years, and enjoyed reading.

He was also preceded in death by his parents.

David is survived by his two sons, David (Michelle) Daniels of Springfield and Tony Daniels of Springfield; daughter, Angela (Jeff) Burt of Springfield; four grandchildren, Alexandra “Lexi” Smith, and Amanda, Sara, and Geno Daniels; four siblings, Richard (Sandy) Daniels, Phillip (Katie) Daniels, Armand “Army” (Jan) Daniels, and Cheri (Bill) Wiant; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2000 E. Sangamon Ave., Springfield. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. George Nellikunnel officiating.

Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
